Before Watchmen: Not a completely terrible idea?

Recently, DC Entertainment began releasing a series of prequel comics to the 1980s series Watchmen, which is considered one of, if not the, greatest comic series of all time. Essentially, there are two schools of thought on this upcoming series; it’s not a bad idea and if handled correctly might even be good and it’s a horrible idea, especially since the writer of the original Watchmen series Alan Moore has publicly been against this new series, saying the idea of a prequel is “completely shameless” and “what I want is for this not to happen.”
While I have great respect for Moore, I can’t really agree with him.

These DC Universe collectibles are pretty sweet. I really dig the Watchmen line and I hope that all the main characters get this same treatment.
‘Watchmen’ prequels: DC dares to expand on classic

DC Comics is going back to the universe of “Watchmen” this summer by launching seven new prequel series that will collectively be referred to as “Before Watchmen,” marking the first time that characters such as Doctor Manhattan, Rorschach and the Comedian have appeared anywhere in comics since the original 12-issue series, which in a single-volume collection became the bestselling graphic novel of all time.
For some fans, the project will be viewed with deep cynicism because of the absence of the “Watchmen” creators, writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons, but others will be intrigued by the fact that the new titles feature some of today’s elite talents, among them J. Michael Straczynski, Darwyn Cooke and Brian Azzarello.
