Ten of 1999 As this year draws to a close,
it's time for the first annual DANGEROUS UNIVERSE top ten list of the years best
movies. Before giving the top ten list as compiled
from the readers of DANGEROUS UNIVERSE, I'd like to give away the number one spot:
THE MATRIX. A film that I thought wouldn't do so well when I first profiled
it in DANGEROUS UNIVERSE waaay back in the winter of 1998, really went to redefine
movies and the movie going expedience. Some call THE MATRIX kinetic, others call
it the first real superhero movie to come out of Hollywood in a long time. Regardless
of what you call the movie, or even if you liked it or not, there's one thing
that you'd have to agree with about the movie THE MATRIX: It
redefined movies for all time. The movies that
almost, but didn't make it: BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, ELIZABETH and a SIMPLE PLAN.

Ten of 1999 | | 1)
The Matrix | In
the words of Mo, "Whoh"! Defiantly
one of the best movies of the decade, THE MATRIX went onto redefining to movie
going expedience for millions. It's only a matter of time before we can expect
sequel after sequel of the movie, and a re release a few more years down the road.
Please Hollywood, copy this movie when you
make THE X-MEN and SPIDERMAN. We all know how well other superhero movies like
CAPTAIN AMERICA and the telepic NICK FURY did. - Bert |
| 2) American Beauty |
"Give them all the Oscars" - Michael Summers I really need
to see this one. Kevin Spacey's in it! - Bert |
| 3)
The Mummy | Sure,
I know it's cheese, but it's fun cheese. Nothing's more fun than a complex chase
movie featuring a "square-jawed" hero and a CGI Mummy. - Bert |
| 4) The Sixth
Sense | The first movie that I've been to that
had the entire audience whispering in disbelief at the finale. This movie did
more to scare me of tight, dark spaces and whispered voices than any other. My
generations THE EXORCIST. - Bert Okay, okay, I give. The kid deserves an
award. - Michael Summers | | 5)
Run Lola Run | The
best rave video I've ever seen. And I mean that in a good way. Scared by subtitles?
Get over it and see this. - Michael Summers The
first movie to copy a video games tendency to give the user multiple lives? Maybe.
- Bert |
| 6) Austin Powers - The Spy Who Shagged
Me | Was I the only person to like this movie?
I went to see this one twice just to be sure that it was as funny as I thought
it was. Really this is a fun movie the never pretended to be
anything other than it really was. Plus having a miniature version of yourself
doesn't hurt in the comedy area either. - Bert |
| 7) Election |
I don't care who wins the Oscars, but it probably matters
to Reese Witherspoon, so they should give her one. She deserves it. - Michael
Summers | | 8)
The Blair Witch Project | I refuse to hate
this movie. It was very creepy and much more interesting that the "tonto"
(stupid) movies like I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER or URBAN LEGEND. THE
BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, like THE SIXTH SENSE, realized your imagination about what
was in the dark was much more frightening than the man with the hooked hand! -
Bert Yeah, yeah, the backlash is on, I know. But this was a movie that stuck
with me for a long time after I left the theater. - Michael Summers |
| 9)
Three Kings | I really
dug this movie. It got a lot of critical acclaim, but the public reaction seemed
mixed. Probably because people came expecting to see LETHAL WEAPON in the desert,
and instead got a movie that made you use your brain a bit. -
Michael Summers | | 10)
Star Wars: Episode 1 | Quite possibly the
most anticipated movie in sixteen years, The Phantom Menace kept Lucas's promise
of bringing the Star Wars universe back to the big screen. Some may complain
that Jar Jar ruined the show except for the fact that all the kids loved him,
and isn't that who the Star Wars movies were for in the first place? - Bert |
